Have your passwords been compromised? Detect breaches with Password Monitor in Microsoft Edge

Password Monitor notifies a user if any of their online passwords have been compromised or exposed on the Dark Web, by periodically scanning a user’s stored passwords and checking these against known third-party data breaches.

Should a breach be detected, users are then able to take prompt action to update their passwords.

The feature aims to prevent data breaches and keeps users safe beyond the first line of defence, and thanks to pioneering cryptography technology, the new feature prevents Microsoft and any third parties from learning a user’s password. Clever, eh?

Safeguarding passwords in Microsoft Edge couldn’t be simpler. To enable Password Monitor, follow these simple steps:

  1. In Microsoft Edge, select the ellipsis in the top right corner and click Settings.
  2. Click Passwords from the menu, and enable the “Show alerts when passwords are found in online leak” option.

Once Password Monitor has been enabled, the tool will regularly scan for any compromised passwords, and notify you if any potential security breaches have been detected. To check for any compromised passwords:

  1. Open Edge, and select the ellipsis in the upper right corner and click Settings, and then Passwords.
  2. Select Password Monitor.
  3. If any of your passwords have been leaked, you’ll be able to see a list of any that have been compromised – if none have been detected, you can select Scan now to initiate a search.
  4. If any of your passwords have been spotted on the Dark Web or are detected in the scan, select Change to update the password. Edge will then take you to the website where your password requires changing so you can stay safe online!
